RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — November 5, 2026. Landslide activity across parts of the Greater Portuguese Bend area has accelerated again, according to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. Survey figures reported October 28 show that actively moving sections averaged 1.05 inches of movement per week, an increase of 7.6% since August. The city links the latest acceleration in part to wave erosion along the base of the slide following strong southerly swells. These figures do not mean that every road or home on the peninsula is moving at the same rate.
What is moving, and how fast?
The city’s official landslide update reports movement in active parts of the complex. That movement was still roughly 30% slower than a year earlier, despite the recent increase. LAist’s October 29 report notes that powerful October swells worsened shoreline erosion. This is a dynamic landslide zone with variable rates between Portuguese Bend, Abalone Cove and other areas; single figures should not be applied to all of Rancho Palos Verdes.
Roads, utilities and residents at risk
Moving ground can crack pavement, break buried pipes and disrupt electricity or gas service. The city has installed and operated deep groundwater dewatering wells and carried out winterization work to reduce infiltration before more winter storms. It has also maintained emergency restrictions affecting part of Palos Verdes Drive South. Those restrictions can change. See California58’s separate report on sewer work and traffic controls, and confirm real-time road conditions with city notices.
Federal grants and voluntary relocation
On October 14, the city announced it had been awarded more than $54 million in FEMA grants for a voluntary property buyout program involving 27 pre-selected properties. The official city program page describes the funding and eligibility criteria. At the November 4 City Council meeting, councilmembers were scheduled to consider formal acceptance of these funds plus more than $1.9 million for permanent power infrastructure for dewatering wells. This article does not claim that a specific November 4 vote occurred without reviewing its final record.
Where residents can check changes
Homeowners in an active slide area should consult official engineering reports, city advisories and relevant utility providers, especially before construction or property transactions. For urgent hazards, contact the appropriate emergency service rather than attempting to inspect moving ground personally. City updates appear at Rancho Palos Verdes Land Movement Updates.
